An executive with a confectionery firm, Ira “Bob” Born considered the “Father of Peeps” for automating the production of marshmallow chicks, sadly passed away on January 29th at 98 years. Born was the longtime leader of Just Born Quality Confections, a 100-year-old family business, which announced on Monday that he had passed away peacefully on the previous day.

On September 29, 1924, Bob was born in New York City. His father, Sam Born, was a Russian immigrant who had established the tiny candy business Just Born Inc. in 1923. Later, the family relocated to Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, which is today the headquarters of Just Born.
Bob Born received his engineering physics degree from Lehigh University. He joined the U.S. Navy and was a lieutenant on a destroyer in the Pacific while working as a radar expert. Later, the Navy sent him to the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and the University of Arizona to pursue graduate studies in math and physics.
