Collins formed a funk band with his elder brother Phelps in 1968, and the band was then called The Pacemakers. The band included Frankie Waddy and Philippe Wynne. Most of the members of the band did quit in March 1970, and they left over a pay dispute. Later the Pacemakers were hired as Brown’s backing band, and then they become known as The J.B.’s.
