Carrie Underwood's Sound of Music Live Acting Slammed by Original Star
The Sound of Music Live! isn’t one of Kym Karath‘s favorite things. The 55-year-old actress, who played Gretl von Trapp in the 1965 musical film The Sound of Music, gathered with former costars Charmian Carr (Liesl von Trapp) and Angela Cartwright (Brigitta von Trapp) to watch the NBC’s live television adaptation of the classic on Thursday, Dec. 5. Unfortunately, the Carrie Underwood and Stephen Moyer remake didn’t impress the original star. See what Underwood tweeted after her performance.
“Mystified & disappointed so far by SOM special,” Karr tweeted Thursday. “So far only happy with Stephen Moyer.” (True Blood star Moyer, 44, took on the role of Christopher Plummer‘s Captain von Trapp, while country singer Underwood, 30, tackled the part of Julie Andrews‘ Maria von Trapp.)
The actress wasn’t so happy, however, with Underwood’s overall performance. Karr tweeted, “Must admit some scenes are actually painful to watch,” she tweeted. Shortly after she added, “Love Carrie Underwood but this role is just not right for her. She is lovely her voice is beautiful but acting is wrong.”
But it wasn’t all bad. Karr did have praise for some of the special’s other stars including Broadway veterans Christian Borle (Max Detweiler) and Elsa Schrader (Laura Benanti).

“Enjoying scene with Captain, Herr Detweiler & Baroness. All excellent actors,” she tweeted. “Loving Laura Benanti’s performance. Great job.”
Regardless of the reviews, Underwood was happy with her performance. “Glory to God tonight . . . I couldn’t be more proud,” she tweeted after the show. “What a tough thing to pull off and we did it! I am so blessed!!!”
