Charlie Dominici, dream theater former singer, dies unexpectedly

Charlie Dominici, the former vocalist of progressive metal band Dream Theater, has passed away, leaving a legacy as the band’s second vocalist, following Chris Collins and preceding James LaBrie. Mike Portnoy, co-founder of Dream Theater, confirmed the news of Dominici’s passing on social media.

Dominici’s unexpected death is a profound loss for the Dream Theater family. He notably lent his voice to the band’s debut album, ‘When Dream And Day Unite,’ recorded in 1988. Recognized not only as a great singer but also as a talented songwriter, guitarist, and keyboardist, Dominici contributed immensely to the band’s early sound and dynamics. Despite parting ways in late 1989, he maintained a friendship with the band, even performing at significant events like a wedding and anniversary shows.

Dream Theater posted on Facebook,

“We are devastated to hear the news of the passing of former Dream Theater singer, Charlie Dominici. Charlie was the voice of DT on our debut album, ‘When Dream And Day Unite’, recorded back in 1988. Beyond being a great singer, he was an incredibly talented songwriter, a well-rounded musician on both guitar and keyboards, and a long-time friend even after his departure from the band. Charlie’s unexpected passing is a tremendous loss to everyone in the Dream Theater family, and we wish to extend our deepest sympathies to the Dominici family during this immensely difficult time.”

Born in Brooklyn, New York, Dominici later moved to the Five Towns area in Nassau County, Long Island. Before joining Dream Theater, he gained recognition for his work in Franke and the Knockouts, showcasing his guitar skills and providing backing vocals.

Today, I'll be listening to #DreamTheater's "When Dream and Day Unite" in honor of our band's original singer, Charlie Dominici, who left us this week.

His tenure with Dream Theater was marked by differences in age, style, and creative approach. Although revered for his vocal prowess, Dominici’s more “pop” vocal style didn’t align seamlessly with the band’s evolving progressive compositions.
