Kevin McHale: Glee Jumped the Shark "When Cory Monteith Died"
Artie Abrams is glad to be out of McKinley High School. Kevin McHale, who starred on the FOX comedy Glee from 2009 to 2015, joked about those pesky spinoff rumors during The HuffPost Show on Friday, May 1.
“Towards the end, there weren’t that many people watching Glee,” he told co-hosts Roy Sekoff and Marc Lamont Hill. “So I don’t know how many people would then watch a spinoff. We’re off the air for a reason.”
McHale, 26, received a round of laughter for his honesty, but he did get serious as to when he thinks the Ryan Murphy-created series jumped the shark.
“I will say, not to bring it down or anything, when Cory Monteith died. I don’t think the show ever came back from that,” he explained. “It wasn’t for a lack of trying, but the story was going in one direction with his character [Finn Hudson] and he was one of two main characters of the show.”

Monteith died at age 31 of a heroin and alcohol overdose in July 2013. Soon after, it was confirmed that Glee would be ending its run after six seasons. The show paid tribute to Lea Michele’s late love several times before its series finale, which aired back in March.
“I think after that the vibe on set was different,” McHale continued on The HuffPost Show. “It was just weird for us being there never mind actually having to be filming. Being one of the writers in that sort of situation — I wouldn’t have known what I would have done because I was like, ‘I don’t really even want to be here.'”
